EP #16 - Sam Moore

Our first international guest. Sam Moore left school in the north east of England, started labouring for his brother, and became his first apprentice after their mum insisted on it. Eleven years ago he started his own company. He now handles estimating, contracts management and technical detailing, and teaches roofing one day a week at his local college. In this episode Sam explains the training problem that was holding his region back. The nearest roofing colleges were two hours away in Leeds and Newcastle, which priced most school leavers out of the trade entirely. He pushed for a programme at Redcar and Cleveland College, and his business has grown roughly 50% in the two years since. The programme placed second and then first in the BMI national apprenticeship awards. He also talks about the UK flat roofing market, why EPDM suits a workforce with a skills shortage, the GRP dry seal system he favours, and how insurers are starting to require proof of maintenance before paying a claim.
