In this ranked Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition match, KnightRushTV plays Japanese vs Byzantines on Arabia against Gusty Pepa (1464 ELO). I open with my standard Men-at-Arms into Archers build, while my Byzantine opponent responds with cheap Skirmishers, looking to neutralize my ranged army. Rather than forcing bad fights, I fall back, focus on my economy and macro, and prioritize a fast transition to Castle Age. A key moment in the game comes from preserving my starting Scout and Men-at-Arms. Instead of throwing them away in Feudal Age, I keep them alive long enough to use as fodder, soaking up Skirmisher attacks while my Archers fire safely from behind. Once those units have served their purpose, I disengage and prepare for my Castle Age power spike. Thanks to a cleaner economy, I reach Castle Age nearly two minutes before my opponent. I immediately upgrade to Crossbowmen and move back onto the map, winning a decisive engagement and wiping out the majority of the Byzantine army before it can match my upgrades. Although my opponent attempts to stabilize by placing a forward Town Center to protect his main gold, I keep the pressure on by constructing a forward Siege Workshop. While Mangonels batter down the Town Center, my Crossbowmen attack from the side, forcing him to split his attention and defend multiple fronts at once. Unable to stop the siege or recover from the massive Castle Age timing disadvantage, the Byzantine player resigns with his Town Center on the verge of destruction. Match Details: Civilization: Japanese vs Byzantines Map: Arabia Opponent: Gusty Pepa Rating: 1464 ELO Strategy: Men-at-Arms → Archers → Fast Castle Age → Forward Siege Workshop Key Units: Men-at-Arms, Crossbowmen, Mangonels Game Mode: Ranked Ladder This match demonstrates how strong macro, preserving early military units, and hitting a fast Castle Age timing can completely swing a game. Reaching Castle Age nearly two minutes ahead created an overwhelming upgrade advantage that the Byzantines simply couldn't recover from.
