Think of someone who wronged you. Someone you despise. Someone who seems beyond forgiveness. Now imagine God's compassion reaching them. Not you—them. How does that make you feel? We love being recipients of mercy. When we fail and the judge says, "Go free," we call that grace and we sing about it. But what happens when the same mercy lands on the person who hurt us? What if the one who cheated you is forgiven? What if the one who broke your family is welcomed home? Be honest. Something in you tightens. In Jonah 4, we meet a prophet who felt exactly that. Jonah preached judgment to Nineveh. The city repented. God relented. And Jonah was furious. This is one of the most uncomfortable chapters in all of Scripture—a man of God burning with rage because God showed compassion to his enemies. This sermon explores: *Everyone loves compassion until it reaches their enemy:* Jonah knew God's character perfectly (Exodus 34:6-7) but hated God's application of it to Nineveh *The Lord cares about the people you wouldn't:* Through the object lesson of a plant, a worm, and a scorching wind, God reveals His heart for the ignorant, the lost, and even the animals *The question that hangs unanswered:* God asks Jonah, "May I not care?" And the book ends with that question—now directed at us *The greater Jonah:* Jesus didn't sit on a hill watching judgment fall. He walked into it. He prayed, "Father, forgive them." The judgment Jonah longed to see fall on Nineveh fell on Christ instead. If you've ever struggled to forgive someone who deeply wronged you, if you've ever resented God's grace toward someone you thought didn't deserve it, this message is for you. The gospel demands that we who have received mercy extend mercy—even to our enemies. *Key Scripture:* Jonah 4:1-11; Exodus 34:6-7; Luke 23:34 *Main Idea:* You and your enemy need the same compassion. *Sermon Quote:* "Jonah wanted the city destroyed. Jesus walked into the destruction. Not as a spectator. As the substitute. The judgment Jonah longed to see fall on Nineveh fell on Christ." *Bible Verse:* Exodus 34:6-7, "The Lord—the Lord is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin." #Jonah #Forgiveness #GodsMercy #Grace #Compassion #ForgiveYourEnemy #Unforgiveness #Jesus #Cross #Gospel #Sermon #BibleTeaching #ChristianFaith #Mercy #PrayForYourEnemies
