What if five words could change everything? In Jonah 3, a reluctant prophet walks into the heart of a violent empire and declares just five words: "In forty days Nineveh will be demolished!" No offer of mercy. No altar call. No comfort. Just judgment.
And the whole city repents.
From the greatest to the least—including the king—Nineveh turns from their evil. They fast, they mourn, they cry out to God. And God, being who He is, relents. He spares them. This is one of the most stunning displays of grace in all of Scripture.
But it raises a question: How can a holy God spare the guilty and still be just?
This sermon traces five words through Jonah 3—**Again. Believed. Perhaps. Spared. Jesus.** —and shows how the cross answers that question. The burning anger of God fell, not on Nineveh, but on His own Son. Mercy did not cost God His holiness. It cost Him His Son.
Join us as we explore:
*Again:* God gives second chances to runaway prophets (and runaway sinners)
*Believed:* The preached word, by God's power, produces a citywide turning
*Perhaps:* Man is responsible to repent; God is sovereign to show mercy
*Spared:* God is free to relent toward even violent Nineveh when it turns from evil
*Jesus:* Something greater than Jonah is here—the One who bore the sentence we deserved
If you've ever wondered if you're too far gone, if your sin is too great, if God could possibly forgive you—Nineveh's story is for you. And if you've been walking with God for years, this message is a call to remember: *Who is your Nineveh? And when will you go?*
*Key Scripture:* Jonah 3:1-10; Matthew 12:41
*Main Idea:* Turn to Jesus, because God is free to spare you.
*Sermon Quote:* "Mercy did not cost God his holiness. It cost him his Son."
*Bible Verse:* Hebrews 13:20-21, "Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—through the blood of the everlasting covenant, equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."
