Wonder what a Sunday service at Benoni Baptist Church is like? Here’s one. Not a performance. A gathering of ordinary people under the Word of God.
You are welcome. Come and see. Come and worship.
About us
I’m Mark Penrith, senior pastor of Benoni Baptist Church. We are conservative, evangelical, and committed to being Biblical. On any given Sunday we preach to the weary, the suffering, the unbeliever, and the mature saint. We aim for timelessness, not trendiness.
Why our worship looks the way it does
What you see in this service is ordered by Scripture. We follow the regulative principle of worship: God tells us how He wants to be worshipped. We do what He commands and avoid what He has not commanded. Not rigidly, but obediently. The elements are simple: we read the Word, pray the Word, sing the Word, preach the Word, and see the Word in the Lord’s Supper.
📖 We read the Word
You will hear Scripture read aloud, publicly and carefully. This is not a preliminary. It is worship. Faith comes by hearing. We read because God speaks. We read and preach from the Christian Standard Bible.
🙏 We pray the Word
Prayer is not a formality. It is communion with God. We pray adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. We pray for authorities and for one another. The Word shapes our prayers.
🎵 We sing the Word
We sing because Scripture commands it: psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. We sing to God and to one another. Singing teaches truth and shapes desire. Our song selection is deliberate: traditional hymns (rich theology, tested by time), modern hymns (doctrinally clear, fresh), and a small number of carefully chosen contemporary songs. We do not use songs from churches whose teaching contradicts primary matters. We test everything. We aim to be a singing church.
🍞 We see the Word
Ordinary bread. Ordinary cup. Not ordinary signs. They proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes: the broken bread, the poured-out cup, the body given, the blood shed, the covenant sealed. The Supper shows what the Word says. Christ crucified. Christ risen. Christ returning.
✝️ We preach the Word
The sermon is exposition. Authorial intent governs meaning. We preach the text as written, not as preferred. Christ stands at the centre of all Scripture, and every text finds its place in Him. We apply specifically and press the text into the conscience: sin, suffering, doubt, drift, obedience. We do not flatten hard texts. We resolve what Scripture resolves, leave unresolved what Scripture leaves unresolved, and refuse false clarity where Scripture is silent.
👨👩👧👦 Our worship is family centred
You will see children. This is intentional. Families worship together. Moses commanded the Law to be read to men, women, and dependents. Ezra read to all who could understand. Jesus welcomed children. Parents disciple, and the church supports. Children watch, sing, pray, and sit under preaching. The home and church work together.
Our aim
That every listener meets Christ and responds. Is God’s Word enough? Is Christ Lord? Will you bow the knee? That question runs through every prayer, every song, and every sermon.
We are not trying to be trendy. We are trying to be faithful. The Word is read. The Word is prayed. The Word is sung. The Word is preached. The Word is seen. Christ is its revealed centre.
