Why Vikings Took People Alive: The Untold Story

What really happened to people captured by Vikings? Were they sold into slavery, forced to work, or given a chance to earn their freedom? When Viking raiders attacked an Anglo-Saxon village, surviving the raid didn't necessarily mean escaping danger. For thousands of captives during the Viking Age, it could mean losing their homes, families, identities, and freedom. In this Norse Chronicles documentary, we uncover the forgotten history of Viking slavery and the people taken captive during Viking raids. Discover why Vikings captured people alive, how captives were transported aboard longships, what happened in Viking slave markets such as Dublin, and how enslaved people—known as thralls—lived and worked in Norse society. We'll also explore Viking trade routes stretching toward the Volga, historical accounts of slavery, the possibility of ransom or freedom, and fascinating DNA evidence connecting Viking Age Iceland to Britain and Ireland. This is the darker, often overlooked side of Viking history—a story not only about warriors, kings, and conquest, but about ordinary people whose lives changed forever. ⚔️ Subscribe to NORSE CHRONICLES for historically grounded Viking documentaries, Norse civilization, forgotten history, and the realities of everyday life during the Viking Age.    / @norse-chronicles   ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 – Captured by Vikings: Your Worst Nightmare 01:05 – Why Vikings Took People Alive 02:03 – Who Became a Viking Captive? 02:58 – The Journey Aboard a Viking Longship 03:35 – Viking Slave Markets: The Rise of Dublin 04:13 – Viking Slave Trade Routes and the Volga 05:06 – Historical Evidence of Viking Slavery 05:28 – Life as a Thrall in Viking Society 06:25 – Families Torn Apart by Captivity 07:19 – Could Viking Captives Be Ransomed? 07:58 – Could a Thrall Become Free? 08:31 – How Many People Were Enslaved? 08:41 – Iceland's DNA Reveals a Hidden History 09:53 – What the Viking Sagas Tell Us 10:23 – Slavery Beyond the Viking World 11:07 – The Forgotten Victims of Viking Raids 11:58 – More Forgotten Viking History History deserves more than legends.
