When You See Life as a Movie, You have Attained Radical Detachment, and then, You Are Free! Paramahansa Yogananda said that "if you see life as a dream, you are free." He also made the parallel with a movie: "if you see life as a movie, you are free." This is not a small statement, because what we are ultimately looking for is freedom — complete freedom from suffering. With the teachings of Advaita, it becomes quite easy to see that life is indeed a movie. And this allows us to look at EVERYTHING that is happening with Radical Detachment: "it is just a movie." Full, Radical Detachment gives you freedom, and just beginning to approach that position puts you in a "much better place." At the beginning of the spiritual path, detachment starts with external events. You also cultivate an internal attitude, such as acceptance, that allows to to have thoughts and feelings that are more gentle, more benevolent, to the mind-body system. From a psychological perspective, and in paths such as Yogananda's, and many others, “internal” means thoughts and feelings, while “external” means the events of your life. However, when you begin to study Advaita, especially after Awakening, you realize that thoughts and feelings are also external. This changes everything and opens the door to Radical Detachment. From the Truth of what you are, the only thing that is truly internal is Awareness. Everything else is external. The entire mind-body system is external. EVERYTHING in the experience you call “my experience” is therefore external: thoughts, feelings, motivations, beliefs, sensations, and even the belief in an “I” here. All of that is in front of You. None of it is part of You, and none of it can touch You — not even the thoughts and feelings arising in the mind-body organism. That is Radical Detachment. When you see life as a movie, and the movie includes thoughts, feelings, events, and also the character playing in it -- EVERYTHING! When all of that is external and has nothing to do with You. When you truly step back from everything — in Zen is called, “the step back”— you realize a position that is Freedom itself . This raises an important dilemma: Do I need to change something, such as a negative feeling, distorted belief, or distorted idea in the mind-body system, or can I simply practice Radical Detachment, and recognize that the whole thing has nothing to do with Me? The answer is largely common sense. If it is easy to detach, simply detach. If a feeling, thought, or belief is sticky — if it “Velcros” you back into the content of your life — then use the Surrendering Technique and surrender that issue in the mind-body system. And then, what has been attaching you back to content is removed, and no longer produces identification and suffering. Through the Surrendering Technique, you can remove the sticky elements of the mind-body system, but if you can detach easily, simply detach. Detachment leads to Peace and Freedom. This again points to the value of Awakening. Awakening allows you to see that you are not the mind-body system, your thoughts, or your feelings. And then, you can practice Radical Detachment: "I am none of that. I am not the mind-body system. I am not the “I,” nor the “I” belief or thought. I am pure, undifferentiated Awareness looking at the show, looking at the movie." That is what Awakening brings. For those interested in Awakening, I leave a link to the Awakening Protocol at the end of this description of the video. Until October 15, 2026 I am offering a $100 discount. The session is one-on-one with me through WhatsApp or Zoom, and it is designed to help you see clearly "what you are and what you are not," helping trigger Awakening and opening the door to Radical Detachment. Clarity about the spiritual path and its different stages allows us to walk it patiently, while honoring where we are now. There is nothing wrong with being in the unawakened state. But is it better to have crossed into the Awakened state. Only then, you can see everything as external. Awakening Protocol: https://giangirardi.com/el-protocolo-...
