Bohemian Rhapsody was six minutes long, had no chorus, and broke every radio rule of 1975. So why did the doubters turn out to be so wrong?
This is the true story of the song that defied the industry and made Queen legends.
In 1975, the music business believed a hit single should run about three minutes. Queen delivered a six-minute mini-opera, reportedly faced pressure to edit it, and refused, backed by their new manager John Reid. Then, as the story goes, Freddie Mercury's friend Kenny Everett played it again and again on Capital Radio, and listeners rushed to the shops. We separate legend from fact: who really doubted the song, what the critics said, the costly gamble of A Night at the Opera, nine weeks at UK number one, the 1991 return to the top, the Wayne's World revival, the 2018 film, and billions of streams.
