An AI control framework called PACMAN helped operate a real fusion experiment at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility. In this episode, we explain how it gathers plasma measurements, predicts what will happen next, turns predictions into commands, and enforces hardware safety limits before those commands reach the tokamak. Researchers report that the framework typically runs in about 20 milliseconds and predicted a tearing-mode instability about 200 milliseconds before it appeared. They also tested heating control, plasma waves, density and rotation, and coordination of six gyrotrons. This does not mean fusion power is ready for the grid. It is a result about fast control inside a research machine. Humans still set the goals, safety boundaries, and operating parameters, and physicists review each experiment.
