Henry Knox - Freedom Has a Weight | Witnesses of History
In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, Witnesses of History: The American Revolution continues with Henry Knox before the impossible road.
December 5, 1775.
Before the cannons moved through the snow, there was a man looking at the weight.
Henry Knox had been a Boston bookseller.
Now Washington needed him to help solve one of the great problems of the siege: Boston was still held by the British, the harbor was controlled by warships, and courage alone could not force an empire to leave.
Freedom Has a Weight is the setup for Iron in the Snow.
This is the moment before the march.
The bookseller becomes the man who must help move iron through winter — across frozen roads, broken sleds, river crossings, mountain paths, and miles of impossible cold.
The song is about the burden behind liberty.
Not the speech.
Not the banner.
The weight.
The rope in the hand.
The chain on the sled.
The cannon that has to move because the cause depends on it.
