#BritishGeography #PeakDistrict #HiddenBritain The Peak District is hiding far more than tea rooms and drystone walls. Under its hills there's a stone that comes from one hill and nowhere else, an old lead mine you can only travel by boat, and a main road that simply slid off the side of a mountain. I'm Alastair. I taught geography for the best part of forty years, and in this film I count down 25 things about the Peak District that plenty of people born there have never been told. By number one you'll see why most of them trace back to one thing. In this video: Why the Peak District has no peak, and where the name really comes from The White Peak and the Dark Peak: a tropical sea and a river delta, side by side Rivers that vanish underground every summer, and warm water in Buxton that may have fallen as rain 5,000 years ago Blue John, Speedwell Cavern, Peak Cavern and the Winnats Pass, all around one village Mam Tor, the Shivering Mountain, and the A625 road that was abandoned in 1979 The drowned villages under Ladybower Reservoir, Eyam's boundary stone and the 1932 Kinder Mass Trespass Chapters (approximate): 00:00 The Peak District is hiding more than you think 01:03 25. The Peak District has no peak 02:55 24. Britain's first national park 04:31 23. Two Peak Districts 06:12 22. A tropical sea in the walls 07:43 21. Hills that were reefs 09:18 20. The millstones of Stanage Edge 10:55 19. The highest village in Britain, probably 12:30 18. The waterfall that blows uphill 14:09 17. England's only mountain hares 15:47 16. The rivers that vanish 17:19 15. Thor's Cave 19:00 14. Buxton's warm water 20:32 13. The Seven Wonders and Eldon Hole 22:12 12. Lead rakes and a lost Roman name 23:48 11. Blue John 25:32 10. Speedwell Cavern by boat 27:15 9. Peak Cavern 29:01 8. The Winnats Pass 30:43 7. Mam Tor, the Shivering Mountain 32:17 6. The Kinder Mass Trespass 33:58 5. Eyam 35:39 4. The drowned villages of Ladybower 37:24 3. Derwent Dam and the Bleaklow wreck 38:55 2. The road that slid off a mountain 40:42 1. Why it all comes back to Castleton 42:17 The whole list again A safety word: the reservoir bed at Ladybower is deep mud when the ruins appear, so view them from the bank. Eldon Hole and the old mine shafts are sheer drops, Thor's Cave is slippery when wet, and the Bleaklow wreck is a memorial, so please leave every piece where it lies. Born and raised in the Peak? Tell me in the comments what I missed, and how you say the names where you live.
