The Blue Ice urban legend has been circulating since commercial aviation took off — frozen chunks of waste from airplane toilet systems that develop leaks, accumulate ice at altitude, and then fall when the plane descends into warmer air, reportedly causing property damage and occasionally injuring people below — and Kari, Tory and Grant decided to investigate properly, going up in a plane to find out exactly where and how Blue Ice forms on an aircraft's exterior, calculating how large a chunk could realistically accumulate before breaking free, building a drop rig to test what that much frozen material does when it hits a roof at terminal velocity, and finding out whether the urban legend is a genuine aviation hazard or one of those stories that sounds more dramatic than the physics ever actually delivers.
