Which action movies were the most popular worldwide from 1962 to 2026? This animated ranking follows changing estimated popularity across James Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Batman, Avatar and the Avengers, covering more than six decades of action movie history.
The story begins with historical epics and war adventures including Ben-Hur, Spartacus and The Guns of Navarone. James Bond brings a different kind of screen hero, while westerns, martial arts films and disaster movies compete for international audiences. Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood and the rise of blockbuster filmmaking change the action genre through the 1960s and 1970s.
Star Wars and Superman introduce another era of large-scale adventures. Indiana Jones, Top Gun, Die Hard and Terminator 2 help define the action films of the 1980s and early 1990s. Jurassic Park brings dinosaurs into the blockbuster competition, Independence Day takes alien invasion worldwide and The Matrix combines martial arts with a virtual world.
The comparison continues through The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, The Dark Knight and Avatar. Marvel's expanding film series brings Iron Man, Black Panther, Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame into the competition, alongside new Star Wars films and established cinema favourites.
Watch the rankings change through cinema closures, streaming releases, theatrical returns and major sequels including Top Gun Maverick, Avatar The Way of Water, Deadpool and Wolverine and Ne Zha 2. These films reach audiences across different countries and generations, with very different routes to lasting popularity.
