A few years ago, people slept outside stores for a pair of Nikes. Today, many of those same shoes sit on sale racks. And on October 1st, 2026, Nike did something no company is supposed to do. It said it had cut sales of the Dunk almost in half, on purpose, and promised fewer Jordan retros.
So why would the world's biggest sportswear brand choose to sell less of the shoes that made it famous?
In this video, we look at how Nike built one of the most powerful desire machines in history, from Bill Bowerman's waffle iron to the SNKRS raffles that made millions of people "take an L." Then we follow how that machine started to break: the flood of Dunks and Jordans, the stores Nike walked away from, the rise of Hoka, On and New Balance, the "Walkers Tolerated" sign in Boston, and the moment Nike's own CEO admitted the company had been oversupplying its most iconic shoes.
This isn't a story about Nike disappearing. It's a story about what happens when a brand built on desire makes its past too easy to buy and its future too hard to find.
