Planning in an early years setting is much more than completing paperwork. It is a thoughtful process that uses children’s individual needs, interests and abilities to shape meaningful learning experiences. This lesson explores how effective planning supports holistic development across physical, cognitive, social and emotional areas, often through one well-chosen activity. You will also learn how following children’s interests can strengthen engagement and intrinsic motivation, while inclusive planning helps children with SEND access and benefit from the same experiences through adapted resources, spaces or support. The lesson explains how practitioners provide appropriate challenge by building on what children already know and can do. It highlights the observe, plan and act cycle, showing how observations and records inform future provision. Finally, it considers the relationship between daily planning and the EYFS, including the seven areas of learning, assessment and meaningful partnerships with parents. Strong planning turns everyday resources, questions and spaces into purposeful opportunities for children to learn and develop.
