Observation is the starting point of the observation, assessment and planning cycle in early years practice. This lesson explains how practitioners gather clear, reliable evidence by watching children in everyday activities, rather than relying on assumptions or brief impressions. You will learn how observations inform assessment, establish a child’s baseline and contribute to a holistic view of development across physical, social and emotional areas. The lesson also shows how children’s interests can shape engaging, personalised activities, such as using a child’s interest in transport toys to support counting and sharing. Ongoing records help practitioners track progress, recognise achievements, identify when further challenge or support may be needed, and adapt the environment. The lesson makes clear that observation is not a medical diagnosis or formal screening procedure. It also explores how sharing specific evidence with parents and carers strengthens communication, trust and consistency between home and the early years setting.
