"And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth apart, and you will never reach the mountains in height." — Surah Al-Isra (17:37)
What does the way we walk, speak, behave, and carry ourselves say about what is happening inside our hearts?
Surah Al-Isra 37–39 brings us back to one of the most important qualities of a believer: humility.
Allah ﷻ tells us not to walk upon the earth with arrogance and pride. No matter how successful, wealthy, educated, powerful, or respected we may become, we are still human beings standing on a piece of earth created by Allah ﷻ.
And the Quran gives us a striking image: you cannot tear the earth apart, nor can you reach the mountains in height.
In other words, what exactly are we so proud of?
Our strength is limited.
Our wealth is temporary.
Our status can disappear.
Our beauty will fade.
Our achievements will eventually be left behind.
Yet the human being can still become arrogant.
These verses remind us that true greatness does not come from appearing greater than others. It comes from recognizing our place before Allah ﷻ.
Then verse 38 warns us that these behaviors — arrogance, pride, and other forms of wrongdoing — are hateful in the sight of Allah ﷻ.
And verse 39 brings this entire passage together by reminding us that these teachings are part of the wisdom Allah ﷻ has revealed to the Prophet ﷺ. They are not simply rules about outward behavior. They are guidance for shaping the heart, character, relationships, and way of life of a believer.
For Muslim women, this message reaches into everyday life. In a world that constantly encourages comparison, status, appearance, achievement, and proving our worth, the Quran gives us a different standard: humility before Allah ﷻ.
Not thinking less of ourselves — but remembering that everything we have is ultimately from Him.

May Allah ﷻ purify our hearts from arrogance, pride, envy, and the desire to feel superior to others. May He grant us genuine humility without weakness, confidence without arrogance, and success without allowing dunya to enter our hearts. May Allah ﷻ make us among those who recognize every blessing as coming from Him and use that blessing to become more grateful, more humble, and closer to Him. Ameen.
