Nanao Bay is an inland sea sheltered by Notojima Island, so it barely ripples. In the evening the water turns red and the island stands black against it. The springs of Wakura originally rose out of that sea. ♨️ About Wakura Onsen Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture. About 5 minutes by car from JR Wakura-Onsen Station. It is one of Japan's rare hot springs that began in the sea itself. Around 1,200 years ago the water rose offshore. A fisherman is said to have found it after seeing an injured white heron healing there. The name Wakura comes from "wakuura" — the bay where water wells up. The water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring at around 90°C at the source. The salt, from seawater, holds heat in long after the bath. ※ In January 2024 the Noto Peninsula earthquake caused severe damage to Wakura 　 and the surrounding region.
