She Sold a Cryptocurrency That Didn't Exist. Then She Vanished

Take the money and run, and blame someone else for this." Prosecutors say that was option one in the "exit strategy" Ruja Ignatova described to her co-founder. On October 25, 2017 she boarded a flight from Sofia to Athens. She has not been seen publicly since. OneCoin took in more than $4 billion from at least 3.5 million people, for a cryptocurrency that U.S. prosecutors say had no real blockchain. Today Ruja Ignatova is on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, with a reward of up to $5 million. This is the story of OneCoin, told from U.S. Justice Department records and reporting by the BBC, Fortune and others: the doctor, the pitch, the network marketing machine, the fake coin, Wembley, the victims, the money, the vanishing, the convictions, the murder claim, and the victim compensation process.
