How Did People Invent the Compass? Before the compass, sailors could only find their way while they could see the sky. Stars, the sun, the coastline, even birds released from the deck told them where to go. But when fog rolled in, they were lost. The answer had been lying in the ground the whole time: magnetite, a stone that grabs iron. People knew about it for thousands of years, but almost nobody noticed what else it could do. It points north, but only if you let it turn freely. In this video we follow the long, strange road from a magic stone to the instrument that changed navigation forever. Along the way we look at Chinese fortune-tellers' spoons on bronze boards, a needle floating on a leaf, an iron fish magnetized by the Earth itself, and Shen Kuo, who noticed something Europe would only discover 400 years later. We also cover Columbus hiding a drifting needle from his crew, and the discovery that the Earth itself is a giant magnet. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Lost at sea without the sky 1:44 Magnetite: the stone that grabs iron 3:20 The Chinese spoon that points south 4:56 Needles, water and the iron fish 6:00 Shen Kuo and the first ship compass 7:36 How the needle became an instrument 9:52 Why north?
