The reservoir is built across the Basnagoda Oya, a tributary of the Attanagalu Oya. Beyond its impressive structure and surrounding landscape, this reservoir plays an important role in providing clean drinking water to communities in Sri Lanka's Western Province. Location & Technical Details Name: Basnagoda Reservoir Location: Karasnagala, Sri Lanka Waterway: Basnagoda Oya, a tributary of the Attanagalu Oya Districts: Gampaha and Kegalle Dam Type: Concrete gravity dam Dam Height: Approximately 20.3 metres Dam Crest Length: Approximately 136.5 metres Reservoir Capacity: Approximately 5.51 million cubic metres Why Is Basnagoda Reservoir Important? The main purpose of the Basnagoda Reservoir is to support the Gampaha–Attanagalla–Minuwangoda Integrated Water Supply Scheme. The Irrigation Department identifies approximately 250,000 residents in Gampaha District as the target population for treated piped drinking water through the reservoir project. The wider integrated water supply scheme also serves communities in Gampaha, Attanagalla, Minuwangoda, Mahara and Mirigama. The project was officially handed over to the public on **18 September 2025**. Basnagoda Reservoir is more than a water-filled landscape. It is an important part of Sri Lanka's water supply infrastructure, designed to help meet the daily water needs of local communities.
