A morning prayer of gratitude for anyone waiting on God, with Psalm 13, Habakkuk's fig tree, Jonah's voice of thanksgiving from inside the fish, the shout over Ezra's foundation, and Jesus giving thanks at Lazarus' tomb. Is there a prayer you have prayed so often you could say it in your sleep? Same request, same few words, and somewhere along the way the thank you went quiet, as if it belonged at the end. Here we open scripture to a psalm that turns from how long to but with no answer in between, a prophet who sang over an empty stall, a man who promised thanksgiving from inside a fish, a crowd who shouted over a foundation twenty years before a roof, and Jesus thanking His Father at an open grave for one thing: being heard. SCRIPTURES IN THIS PRAYER Psalm 13:5, 6 "But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me." Psalm 13:1 "How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?" Habakkuk 1:2 "O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear!" Habakkuk 3:17, 18 "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation." Jonah 2:9 "But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD." Ezra 3:11 "And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid." John 11:41, 42 "Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always..." 1 Chronicles 4:10 (in the prayer) "Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me..." 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4 (the blessing) "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God." If you can say it with me today, add those five words below, and if you like, name one thing you are thanking Him for while you wait. If somebody comes to mind who has been waiting a long while, this might keep them company. Look through what others have written, choose one person, and thank God for them right there in their waiting.
