Tour de Florissant, the final day of the Gateway Cup. Masters 50+, six turns through Old Town Florissant, technical with a punchy climb and a flat finish. Front and rear cameras with live power and heart rate. This was the most fun I had on a bike all season, and the race where I made my clearest mistake. I did not clip in well at the start and had to work up from the back, which turned out to be easy on this course. Turns four and five before the climb were where I could move up almost at will. My legs were the best they had felt all weekend. Two riders got a gap in the last five laps, two more went across, and there were four dangling off the front. With two to go I heard a $100 prime announced and went for it, thinking that was worth more than racing for fifth. I crossed the line first. It was not a field prime, so it went to a rider up the road. I got back on the group with nothing left, and my teammate Laszlo Alberti won the field sprint for third. The numbers say the legs were genuinely there. Intensity factor 1.08 and normalized power 339, both the highest of any race I recorded this season, on day four after three races in 100 degree heat. 148 surges over 500 watts. My peak hit 1,279 watts at the 27 minute mark. Then 915 watts for the prime with 2:30 to go, and 318 watts for the final 30 seconds, because there was nothing left. Finished 14th. Bummed to miss the podium, but this course was a blast and I will be back next year. Four days: 8th, 9th, a dropped chain, and 14th.
