Nora is sixty-six years old. She lives in her son's house in Reading, Pennsylvania. There are four doors upstairs. Three of them open. The last one on the left is always locked. Her son's wife Claire has a key. Every morning Claire goes down that hall, unlocks the door, stays inside for two minutes, locks it again, and goes to work. She has done this every single day for fourteen months. Nora asked what was in there. Claire said, "Storage." Nora did not believe her. So one Tuesday, when the house was empty, she took a screwdriver out of the kitchen drawer. She found out what was behind the door. She also found out what kind of person she had become.
