Glenna Vrabel is sixty-six. She lives in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
On a Saturday morning in September, she was vacuuming in her robe when
somebody knocked on the door.
The woman on the porch was about forty-six. She asked if Glenna's name
used to be Glenna Marie Hudak. Then she said: I think you're my mother.
She had a folder. Inside it was a copy of an original birth record.
Baby girl, born March 9th, 1979, Latrobe Hospital. On the line for the
mother it said Glenna Marie Hudak, age nineteen, with Glenna's exact
date of birth.
Glenna has never been pregnant. Not once in sixty-six years.
The paper was real. The name was real. The birthday was real.
And Glenna has a younger sister who went away to stay with an aunt for
most of 1979, and came home in June, thin and quiet.
