She became a great serpent, crossing the moonlit Hidaka River in pursuit, and coiled around the bell of Dojo-ji where he had hidden. The flame embraced the bell, and a single love returned to ash. Yet this is not a tale of vengeance, but the grief of a love with nowhere to go. At the end, a song of repose gently lays the spirit down to rest. At an inn in Kii Province she fell in love with Anjin, a young traveling monk. When he broke his promise to return after his pilgrimage, her longing turned to sorrow and then to fury, until she transformed into a great serpent. She crossed the moonlit Hidaka River in pursuit and, finding Anjin hidden inside the bell of Dojo-ji temple, coiled around it and consumed it in flame. Recorded in the Dai-Nihonkoku Hokke Genki and the Konjaku Monogatari, the tale has been retold for centuries in Noh, Kabuki, and puppet theater — one of Japan's greatest stories of tragic love and the supernatural.
