Genesis 5: The God Who Walks With Us
What can a long list of names and ages possibly teach us about walking with God?
As we read and pray through Genesis 5, we encounter a genealogy that can be easy to skim. Generation follows generation, lives are lived, children are born, and the same sobering words appear again and again: “and then he died.” The consequences of sin introduced in Genesis 3 now echo through every generation.
But tucked into this genealogy is one remarkable life. Enoch “walked faithfully with God.” In a chapter dominated by death, his life stands out as a testimony to what matters most—not simply how long we live or what we accomplish, but whether our lives are lived in relationship with God. His example invites us to consider what it means to walk with God through the ordinary days and years He gives us and what kind of spiritual legacy we are leaving for those who come after us.
Today’s prayer moves from the brevity of life toward a deeper desire to walk faithfully with God—thanking Him for His presence through every season, asking Him to draw us into closer fellowship with Him, and praying that our lives will leave a legacy of faith for the generations who follow.
