If you've been looking at software engineering jobs in Japan, you may have started seeing a strange new title: Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE. What exactly does this person do?
Basically, this is 4 jobs rolled into one and they want you to use AI to fill in the gaps. That’s my understanding.
Solution Engineer + Technical Consultant + Software Engineer + Customer Success
Why are companies creating these roles now?
AI makes SaaS products much more flexible. Instead of selling a product that works the same way for every customer, Enterprise customers increasingly want:
Custom AI workflows
CRM integrations
API connections
Proofs of concept
etc.
That creates a need for someone technical who can go into the customer's messy real-world environment and make the technology actually work.
And that's where Forward Deployed Engineering comes in.
Why This Position Is Exciting
A Cutting-Edge "AI-Native" Career
Directly contribute not only to customer success but also to the evolution of the product
In plain English
This is essentially a customer-facing technical role sitting between Sales/CS and Engineering. They want someone who can talk to Enterprise clients, understand their business/technical problems, figure out how Channel Talk's product and AI can solve them, handle integrations such as APIs and webhooks, lead PoCs, and then communicate what they learn back to the engineering/product teams.
In this job post, PoC means Proof of Concept, and it is probably one of the more important parts of the FDE role.
A PoC is essentially a small, controlled implementation designed to prove that a proposed solution will actually work for a particular Enterprise customer before the company commits to a full rollout.
What you might actually do as the FDE
A typical PoC could involve:
1. Understand the customer's problem
For example:
"Your CS team spends 40% of its time answering questions about order status."
You would figure out exactly what data and systems are involved.
2. Design the solution
You might determine that the architecture should look something like:
Customer
↓
The company you're working for
↓
AI Agent
↓
CRM / Order System
↓
Customer-specific information
↓
AI generates response
↓
Customer
3. Build the integration
This could involve things like:
APIs
Webhooks
Authentication
Data mapping
CRM integration
Sending customer/order information to the AI
Triggering workflows
Handling errors
Creating test environments
4. Run the experiment
You might have the AI handle a limited percentage of inquiries, or only a specific category of questions.
5. Measure whether it worked
You'd establish metrics such as:
AI resolution rate
Customer satisfaction
Accuracy
Escalation rate
Average response time
Reduction in human CS workload
Number of incorrect responses
Then you can tell the customer:
"During the PoC, the AI successfully handled 72% of order-status inquiries without human intervention, with a 94% accuracy rate."
At that point, the customer has evidence to decide whether they want to move forward with a larger implementation.
You're essentially saying:
"Give me your business problem. I'll figure out whether and how our technology can solve it, prove it with a working implementation, and then help you scale it."

About me:
I've been in Japan for over 10 years and was an English teacher for more than half of that time. Now I work a day job at a Japanese software company, while running my own Shopify development studio in the rest of my time. I've built a total of 90 new Shopify websites for clients so far and started out as just a freelancer on Upwork.
I also have a mentoring program where I help other people get into the tech industry and get started as a freelance web developer.
