Right now Ethiopia's calendar says it's 2019. The year has 13 months, New Year falls in September, and the clock starts at dawn. Ethiopia isn't 'behind'. Its year count goes back to Alexandrian scholars around AD 400, who calculated the Incarnation differently from Dionysius Exiguus, the monk behind the AD system, in 525. In this video we explain the seven-or-eight-year gap (and why historians still debate it), the 13th month Pagume, Enkutatash on 11 or 12 September, Ethiopian clock time, and how Ethiopians live with two calendars today, from the budget year to Timkat and the 2007 millennium.
Do you use two calendars, or two clocks? Tell us in the comments.
