Located in the county of North Yorkshire, and around seven miles southwest of Middlesbrough, is the town of Yarm (alternatively known as Yarm-on-Tees). Geographically, Yarm is situated around a sharp meander of the River Tees at a section where it serves as the border between the ceremonial counties of North Yorkshire and County Durham. In 1207 a market charter was granted to Yarm by King John. For several centuries, it was the largest port on the River Tees, trading with Scotland, France and the Low Countries. During the 18th century, portside activity began to decline with the emergence of Stockton-on-Tees downstream. The subsequent emergence of Middlesbrough in the 19th century left Yarm unable to compete, and so it ceased its port trading altogether. Just west of the town centre is the Parish Church of Mary Magdalene. This was built in 1730 after a fire destroyed a Norman predecessor on the same site. In 1825 a branch line was built from the Stockton and Darlington Railway - the world's oldest steam-powered passenger railway, connecting it to Yarm (or in reality, the neighbouring village of Eaglescliffe just north of the Tees), albeit for coal traffic primarily. The main railway line arrived in Yarm in 1852, along with the Yarm Viaduct (built between 1849 and 1852, seen just after the 14-minute mark). The station of today is situated on the Northallerton–Eaglescliffe Line. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
