Some of the deepest worship happens with empty hands. This song begins where 2 Chronicles 16:9 says the Lord's eyes run through the earth looking for a heart that is shalem, whole and wholly His. It moves through Isaiah 61, where the Hebrew sets beauty (pe'er) against ashes (efer), and ends with the promise that the ruins will be rebuilt by grace and not by might. A calm 6/8 cinematic ballad with piano, strings, and a tender female voice, made for anyone laying something down tonight.
[Verse 1]
I held it all with trembling hands,
Afraid to lose the things I'd planned.
I built my walls on borrowed sand,
I ran so hard I couldn't stand.
But Your eyes roam the earth tonight,
Searching for hearts that are wholly Thine.
So here I am with open hands,
Here I am.
[Pre-Chorus]
And I lay it down, I lay it down,
Every fear and every borrowed crown.
What's ending here is not the end,
You're making room for more again.
[Chorus]
You're breathing on my yes in the less,
Winds of heaven rushing through my emptiness.
What I surrender makes room for more,
I'll build what You are building, Lord.
Not by striving, but from rest,
Accelerate my yes.
[Verse 2]
I chased the doors that glittered gold,
I ran the wheel till my heart grew cold.
I wore my worth like a heavy load,
I built in fear on a borrowed road.
But You whispered, "Child, you are Mine,
I delight in you, abide in the Vine.
It's not your doing that makes you whole,
It's My love."
[Pre-Chorus]
And I lay it down, I lay it down,
Every fear and every borrowed crown.
What's ending here is not the end,
You're making room for more again.
[Chorus]
You're breathing on my yes in the less,
Winds of heaven rushing through my emptiness.
What I surrender makes room for more,
I'll build what You are building, Lord.
Not by striving, but from rest,
Accelerate my yes.
[Bridge]
There's a groan inside me, deeper than words,
A new way of building I've never known.
The Spirit of the Lord is on me now:
Good news for the poor, the captives freed,
Beauty for ashes, oil of joy,
A mantle of praise where the heavy grieved.
They will rebuild the ancient ruins,
Raise up what was long laid waste,
Restore the cities torn and broken,
Not by might, but by Your grace.
[Repeat, gently building]
They will rebuild the ancient ruins,
Raise up what was long laid waste,
Restore the cities torn and broken,
Not by might, but by Your grace.
[Final Chorus]
You're breathing on my yes in the less,
Winds of heaven rushing through my emptiness.
What I surrender makes room for more,
I'll build what You are building, Lord.
From Your joy and from Your rest,
From the ruins, from the ashes,
Accelerate my yes.
[Outro, softly]
Less is more, Less is more.
In my surrendered yes, You are more.
