After a loss in PIT and a close shave against MTL in Hartford the Whalers packed their bags for an over-night trip to New York City to play the Rangers. The Whalers beat the Rangers 3-1 in Hartford in Game 6 so they did not expected a warm welcome. The 1st period did not offer a lot of chances for either team but Hartford did have the edge in shots. The Rangers scored first about halfway through the period though. Pat Verbeek stole the puck off Andrew Cassels near center-ice and broke into the Hartford zone, beat Glen Wesley to the net, deked out Sean Burke and tucked the puck in blocker-side the long way. The Whalers kept the pressure on and managed to tie the game in the last three minutes. Andrew Cassels was credited with a Rangers' own-goal when Brian Leetch picked up the puck at the backboards after the face-off and stuffed it in the net past Mike Richter. The score was 1-1 at the 1st intermission with the shots at HTF 15 and NYR 7. The shot gap expanded in the 2nd period but there was only one goal. That gave Hartford the lead at 2-1 when Geoff Sanderson sent a big backhander past Mike Richter's blocker-side from the face-off dot on his wing off a pass from Steven Rice between the hashes. Shots at the 2nd break were HTF 35 and NYR 15. The Whalers dominated the chances in the 3rd period but Mike Richter was very solid in the NYR net. The Whalers managed to solve him with about nine minutes to go. Geoff Sanderson beat him blocker-side from right beside the net off a short pass from in front by Adam Burt to get Hartford into the comfort zone. About two-and-a-half minutes after that Geoff Sanderson completed his natural hat-trick with another goal from right beside the net off a sweet pass from Steven Rice. The game ended 4-1 for Hartford thanks to great pressure that minimized the Rangers' chances including holding them to just four shots in the 3rd period. Sean Burke was solid again too stopping 18 of 19 on the night. Enjoy!
