A commutator in quantum mechanics measures how much two operators fail to commute. If it’s nonzero, it implies the corresponding observables are incompatible—meaning they cannot be precisely known at the same time.
Commutator algebra is the set of rules and identities that govern these operator relationships. It forms the backbone of quantum structure, especially in defining symmetries, conserved quantities, and the behavior of systems under transformations.
Physically, commutators determine uncertainty relations, reveal dynamical evolution through Heisenberg’s equation, and indicate whether quantities are conserved. They are also central in quantization, replacing classical Poisson brackets to define operator dynamics.
