Inadequacies is a contemporary solo marimba work by Australian percussionist and composer Joey Eng, exploring themes of self-acceptance, vulnerability, and the struggle with self-doubt. The thematic material for the piece emerged during a period of writer’s block, accompanied by feelings of imposter syndrome and self-loathing. What began as a difficult period in the creative process gradually became a journey of self-acceptance and coming to terms with personal and musical limitations. Through the process of composing Inadequacies, Eng transforms these deeply personal experiences into music, inviting the performer and listener to reflect on the expectations we place upon ourselves, both as musicians and as individuals.
