In this ranked Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition match, KnightRushTV plays Japanese vs Khmer on Arabia against Soloarqueros at 1486 ELO.
I open with my usual Men-at-Arms into Skirmishers, but quickly realize my opponent is attempting a very greedy Fast Castle with little to no Feudal Age defense. That gives me an opportunity to cause as much economic damage as possible before his Castle Age units arrive.
I keep the pressure on until the first Scorpion appears, at which point I immediately back away rather than throw my army into a bad engagement. His extremely fast uptime gives him a huge technological advantage, and I don't reach Castle Age until approximately eight minutes after him.
However, there's a trade-off.
While my opponent sacrificed his economy to reach Castle Age incredibly quickly, I arrive much later with a significantly stronger economy behind me. He responds by adding multiple Town Centers to try to catch up, setting the stage for a much longer battle than his Fast Castle opening might have suggested.
Once I finally reach Castle Age, I immediately grab Crossbowman and Bodkin Arrow and move back onto the map. That's when I discover my opponent attempting to build a Castle on the central hill.
Stopping that Castle becomes the defining battle of the game.
For roughly the next 10 minutes, we fight continuously around the hill as he desperately tries to complete the Castle and I repeatedly deny it. Reinforcements keep arriving from both sides, but I manage to maintain enough pressure to prevent the Castle from ever going up.
Eventually, both of us transition toward Imperial Age. My opponent reaches it slightly ahead—but this time the delay is self-inflicted. I accidentally leave my Imperial Age upgrade stuck behind roughly two minutes of villager production without noticing!
Despite giving away the timing advantage, I'm still able to establish my position and take control of the Trebuchet war. After destroying his Castle and eliminating the Mangonels protecting his base, the Khmer defenses finally collapse and Soloarqueros resigns.

This game was a great example of why Age of Empires II isn't simply about reaching the next Age first. I was approximately eight minutes behind to Castle Age and still came out with the stronger long-term position because of the economic investment behind my slower uptime.
The constant battle to deny the central Castle became the turning point, and even after accidentally delaying my own Imperial Age timing, winning the Trebuchet war was enough to finally break through.
