What does a small country do when it cannot win a fight? That is not a rhetorical question, it is the whole plot of this video, and the usual answers run from building a navy to finding oil under the sand and spending the next century insufferable about it. Denmark did neither. Instead, a kingdom about to lose a third of its land and a third of its people to a Prussian army that treated the border like a polite suggestion looked at its hand and found exactly two cards worth playing, and both of them came in petticoats. One would stand beside the throne of the British Empire and the other beside the throne of all the Russias, covering the two largest empires in Europe with the same sharp Danish profile and, on more than one documented occasion, the same dress.
