The Buried First Floors of America — What Happened to the Old Street Level?

Across America, some of the oldest surviving buildings appear to have something strange in common: windows, doors, and entire lower floors sitting below today’s street level. But why? In cities such as Chicago, changes to street grades, drainage systems, rebuilding, flooding, fires, and decades of urban development physically transformed the relationship between buildings and the ground beneath them. Chicago offers one of the most dramatic examples. In the 1850s, engineers raised portions of the city’s streets and physically lifted massive buildings to accommodate a new sewer system. But Chicago was not the only American city where the old relationship between buildings and street level changed. In this documentary, we investigate the buried first floors of America through historical photographs, maps, engineering records, newspapers, architectural evidence, and contemporary accounts. Were these buildings actually buried? Were the streets raised? Or are some of the strange lower levels simply the result of later construction and changing urban grades? And most importantly: What really happened to the old street level? This is an investigation into the physical layers beneath America's historic cities — where the past isn't just written in documents.
