Tiësto - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (September 9, 2001) | DJ Mix Archive

This is Tiësto's very first Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1, broadcast on September 9, 2001. At the time he was still billed as DJ Tiësto, a DJ from Breda in the Netherlands who had been playing Dutch clubs since the mid 1980s. In 1997 he co-founded Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink, and 2001 was the year his debut album In My Memory came out. The Essential Mix was the biggest weekly showcase in dance music, two hours on Radio 1 hosted by Pete Tong. Getting asked to do one was a pretty big deal, and this one caught Tiësto right before things blew up. A year later he was voted the number one DJ in the world, and by 2004 he was playing the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics. It starts out deep, with tribal-leaning progressive house from DJ Hooligan, a Deep Dish dub of Planet Funk, X-Press 2's Smoke Machine and the Creamer & Stephane K remix of iiO's Rapture. Through the middle he brings in his own records, Obsession with Junkie XL and Lethal Industry, next to a Dave Clarke remix of Midfield General. The second half builds into progressive trance with Flight 643, the original mix of Suburban Train, and Max Graham's Sepia to close. Radio 1 thought enough of this set to rebroadcast it as a Classic Essential Mix in September 2021, twenty years after it first aired. Visuals provided by https://VJ.Studio.
