Jazz drummers don't take full advantage of what the hi-hat foot has to offer for creative expression, independence, and expanding technical chops. Today's video gives you a method to start approaching improvising with your hi-hat foot. John Hvasta's philosophy of the four limbs and independence is part of his New Science of Drumming and what he calls the Four Spirits. Each limb represents a spirit of the percussionist it replaced when the drum set took over and eliminated the need for separate classical percussionists to play together. Because each limb to John represents a spirit that belonged to a separate whole human being, John sees the full potential of a human being in each limb, and that creates a whole different, leveled up concept and technical challenge of independence. This is a very unique approach to teaching, learning, and playing Jazz drums. It will open up vistas of creativity, technique, and expression for you if you stay with John on his exploration of it over time.
