EP16 | Heath Waystone at Dusk — Vael Drakenhart Copies an Old Inscription Someone carved this stone a very long time ago. He wants to know what they wrote. Vael Drakenhart kneels on one knee at the foot of a leaning waystone out on an open highland heath, the last light already gone behind the hills. He holds a sheet of thick paper flat against the carved face with one hand and rubs a charcoal stick across it with the other — slow, even strokes — and the old letters rise through the paper one at a time. His travel journal lies open on his knee, his oilcloth map case set down in the heather beside him. There is no hurry in any of it. The heather runs unbroken to the horizon, deep purple turning grey as the light leaves the hill. A thin footpath crosses the ground and a small cairn of stacked stones marks its edge. Far below in the valley a village has begun lighting its windows — a handful of warm amber squares and a stone church tower, its chimney smoke lying flat along the valley floor. The wind comes low across the field and lifts the hem of his surcoat. Somewhere in the far sky a small flight of birds is crossing. This is 2 hours and 20 minutes of calm fantasy and medieval instrumental music — hurdy-gurdy drone, celtic harp, lute, wooden recorder, vielle and softly fingerpicked guitar. No lyrics. No drums. No dramatic climax. Music that stays open and patient, the way an empty heath does. Made for reading, writing, studying, drawing, long quiet evenings, tabletop role-playing sessions, or falling asleep somewhere far from home. Stay a while. Nobody else is coming along this path tonight. 🗺️ Scene: An open medieval highland heath at dusk stretching unbroken to the horizon — blooming heather in deep purple and rust brown turning purple-grey as the last light leaves the hill, a single old leaning waystone of carved grey granite standing where a footpath crosses, its worn runes and weathered lichen still legible, a pale track worn thin through the heather leading away over low rounded hills, wind-bent thorn trees and lichen-covered boulders, a small stacked cairn of prayer stones at the path's edge, and far below in the valley a tiny medieval village with a stone church tower showing a handful of warm amber windows, its chimney woodsmoke settling in a flat layer along the valley floor, a low band of orange and rose in the western sky behind blue-grey hills, slow cloud shadows crossing the open ground. 🎧 Best experienced with headphones or soft speakers at a low, comfortable volume. 🌙 New journeys from Vaelwyn every Wednesday & Saturday. 🔔 Subscribe and travel with us: every traveler is welcome here. 🎼 Tracklist 0:00 West Leaning Stone 3:09 Charcoal on Thick Paper 5:13 Heather Going Grey 8:47 Woodsmoke Settling in the Valley 11:11 The Path Worn Pale 13:22 A Cairn of Small Stones 16:17 Lamps Coming On Below 18:47 Whatever the Stone Remembers 20:57 West Leaning Stone (ver. 2) 24:16 Charcoal on Thick Paper (ver. 2) 26:46 Heather Going Grey (ver. 2) 29:45 Woodsmoke Settling in the Valley (ver. 2) 32:26 The Path Worn Pale (ver. 2) 34:59 A Cairn of Small Stones (ver. 2) 37:24 Lamps Coming On Below (ver. 2) 40:13 Whatever the Stone Remembers (ver. 2) 42:43 The set replays — the same sixteen tracks loop again #fantasymusic #medievalmusic #relaxingmusic #ambientmusic #celticmusic #lofi #cozyfantasy #instrumentalmusic #calmmusic #readingmusic #studymusic #backgroundmusic #dndmusic #rpgmusic #harpmusic #sleepmusic #fantasyambience #vaelwyn
