I Hiked Into The Burned Mournes… This Was Hard To See

This week’s hike in the Mourne Mountains was very different from the usual adventures here on David’s Hiking to Health. Starting from Leitrim Lodge Car Park, I headed towards Rocky Mountain before turning onto the trail alongside Altataggart Mountain to investigate the devastating fire damage left behind in the Mournes and to see just how close it came to Rostrevor Forest. What I found was heartbreaking. In this video, we take a closer look at the scale of the destruction, including a visual comparison using a map of Belfast to truly understand how much land was affected. Seeing it in person really puts things into perspective. There’s no tarp setup or camp cooking in this week’s video out of respect for the situation and the sensitive condition of the landscape. Instead, this video is about awareness, reflection, and appreciating just how fragile these mountains really are. The Mournes mean so much to so many people — a place for adventure, peace, mental clarity, and escape — and hopefully this video encourages all of us to do our part in protecting them for future generations.
