ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජනවාර්ගික ගැටලුවලට මගපෑදූ මූලබීජය ඉංග්‍රීසි ආණ්ඩුව උපක්‍රමශීලීව පැළ කිරීමේ ආදීනව වර්තමානයේදීද දැකගැනීමට හැකියාව පවතිනවා. ඉතිහාසය වර්තමානයේ පිහිටා අධ්‍යයනයෙන් තොරව අතීතයේ හුදු කතන්දරයක් ලෙස අර්ථ ගන්වමින් විධිමත් අධ්‍යාපනයේ සිට ලබා දීම බහුතරයක් ලාංකිකයන් මුලාවෙන් අන්ධ කිරීමට හේතු වී ඇත. එහිදී ඉතිහාසය යනු වර්තමානයට සාපේක්ෂව අතීතයේ ව්‍යුත්පන්නයකින් ගොඩනගන ප්‍රවාදයක් බව සිහිපත් නොකර අතීතයේ සිදුවී අවසන් දෙයක් ලෙස පෙන්වමින් දැනුමක් ලෙස රැස් කරගෙන තලු මැරීමට පමණක් පුරුදු කරවීම බටහිරයන්ගේ ඊනියා නූතනත්ව සංකල්පවලට අතීතයෙන් ගිලිහී වර්තමානයේ අනුගත කරගැනීමට සැකසූ උපක්‍රමයක්දැයි නිශ්චිත සැකයක් ඇති කරයි. නමුත් සත්‍ය කෙතරම් මුසා මැද වූවද ඉලිප්පී පැමිණීම ලෝක ස්වභාවයකි. The consequences of the seed of ethnic issues in Sri Lanka, strategically planted by the British colonial government, are still visible today. Teaching history as a mere tale of the past—without studying it from the standpoint of the present—starting from formal education, has blinded the majority of Sri Lankans with misconception. By failing to remind us that history is a thesis constructed from the derivatives of the past relative to the present, and instead presenting it as something finished in the past to be gathered as mere knowledge for passive consumption, it raises a definite suspicion: was this a ploy designed by Western so-called concepts of modernity to detach people from their past and adapt them to the present?
