Kongemordet I Finderup (The King-Killing In Finderup) is a very old Danish folk song, about the murder of king Erik Klipping in 1286. It is believed that 9 prominent nobles were behind the murder, among them the marshal, Marsk Stig, and Andersen Hvide and Jacob Nielsen, the Count of Halland. Ranild Jonson was one of the king's squires, and is generally believed to have been in on the plot, not protecting his king. The murder took place in a church barn, in the village of Finderup in northern Denmark, where a monument still stands to this day. King Erik Klipping had for years upset the powerful nobles in the realm, and was forced to sign the first coronation charter in Danish history, called "Håndfæstning" - He was killed likely as a plot for the nobles to seize more power. There is also a legend that the murder was a revenge plot by Marsk Stig, for his wife's seduction by the King while he was away fighting for the crown. This does seem less likely. Sadly the records were lost during a great fire in the Viborg cathedral in 1726. The murderers fled to Norway seeking protection under king Erik II "Priest-Hater" of Norway, who was a rival to Denmark. The outlaws returned to Denmark, capturing the island of Hjelm, from which they launched pirate raids into Denmark. The son of Erik Klipping, King Erik Menved, would eventually retake Hjelm island and vanquish the pirates, avenging his father. The murderers either fled to Norway again, or were caught and executed. The flag is the battle standard/royal standard of the Estridsens dynasty, the historical royal family of Denmark, and the "flag" used by Denmark before the modern flag was adopted sometime in the late 1200s to early 1300s. The song uses quite poetic old Danish. The original song: Kongemordet I Finderup - Frode Veddinge    • Kongemordet I Finderup
