Food From the DUMP! She Fries It on an Open Fire in a Homeless CAMP

She's frying sausage she found at the dump — but before that, there's cheese well past its expiration date, moldy dough that has to be burned, and a hungry pack of camp cats waiting for scraps. The day starts with Lena unpacking food from the fridge and cutting up sausage for the camp cats — feeding the animals here happens right alongside feeding the people. Sasha snacks on a pear picked straight from a tree while the sausage sizzles nearby, joking that even the fruit smells like it. Before the fire can be lit, there's a familiar problem: no water in the kettle, so it's collected the way it always is here — in bottles, carried in by hand. Once the food is out, the sorting begins. Some of it makes the cut — a block of cheese that still looks and tastes fine, despite being expired for a while. Some of it doesn't — a bag of dough, found in the trash like everything else, has gone moldy and has to be burned instead of cooked. Lena washes the plates before cooking starts, then gets the frankfurters into a pan with a splash of sunflower oil over the open fire. Sasha helps where he can, rinsing his hands in the same basin used for laundry. Once the frankfurters are browned and the tea is steeped — two bags and plenty of sugar in one thermos — everyone eats, including the cats.
