The agreement, signed on November 1, 2026, in Berlin, will see Uganda's tourism brand featured on the playing kits of the club's first men's team and G2 youth team, using football as a platform to promote Uganda to German audiences. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Ambassador Danny Ssozi, Uganda's Chargé d’Affaires a.i. in Berlin, accompanied by Second Secretary Jessica Namuddu, alongside representatives of the German club. The initiative is part of Uganda's efforts to explore new ways of marketing the country internationally, with Germany identified as an important tourism market. Through football, Uganda hopes to reach supporters, local communities and young people while generating greater interest in visiting the Pearl of Africa. VfB Einheit zu Pankow, a Berlin-based football club with a history dating back to 1893, provides a grassroots sporting platform for the campaign. The partnership also aims to strengthen cultural exchange, community engagement and people-to-people relations between Uganda and Germany. However, the announcement has generated mixed reactions among Ugandans on social media, particularly on X. While some have welcomed the initiative as a creative approach to tourism promotion, others have questioned the choice of club and whether the partnership will deliver sufficient international exposure for Uganda. Some critics have argued that Uganda should have pursued partnerships with more prominent European football clubs with larger international audiences. Others have defended the agreement, describing it as a starting point for building stronger connections within the German market. The debate has also brought comparisons with Rwanda's high-profile football sponsorship campaigns, prompting questions about how Uganda can use sports marketing to compete for international tourism attention. Nevertheless, the partnership offers Uganda an opportunity to take its tourism message beyond traditional advertising platforms. Its success will ultimately depend on how effectively the Embassy and tourism authorities turn football visibility into measurable awareness, visitor interest and actual tourism growth. With Uganda's wildlife, national parks, adventure tourism, cultural heritage and natural attractions waiting to be explored, the message is clear: the Pearl of Africa wants more Germans to discover what the country has to offer.
