Before NBA 2K became one of the biggest sports gaming franchises in the world, it started on the Sega Dreamcast. In this video, I go back to the original NBA 2K to see how the very first game in the series holds up more than 25 years later.
Released in 1999, NBA 2K was developed by Visual Concepts and published by Sega exclusively for the Dreamcast at launch. The game featured Allen Iverson as its cover athlete and helped establish the realistic presentation, player animations, and simulation-style basketball that would eventually define the 2K series.
I revisit the gameplay, graphics, shooting, dribbling, dunks, presentation, player models, and overall basketball experience to see just how different the original NBA 2K feels compared with modern games like NBA 2K26 and NBA 2K27. Did NBA 2K get it right from the beginning, or does the first game feel ancient by today’s standards?
