Torrey Pines – La Jolla, California - Day 2: Swami’s Beach, Collapsing Cliffs, History & Sunset

Torrey Pines – La Jolla Peninsula, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure – Day 2/3 On Day 2 we check out a North County surf spot called Swami’s Beach in Encinitas, inspect the shocking and concerning cliff collapse and erosion in Torrey Pines, learn about the history of the Torrey Pines Reserve, and take in a breathtaking technicolor sunset from Torrey Pines City Beach. Let’s head up the coast to Encinitas to check out a local North County surf spot called Swami’s Beach. Swami's Beach is named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, who was an Indian monk, yogi, and guru who moved to Encinitas in the 1930s. In 1937 he built the Self-Realization Fellowship on the bluffs overlooking Swami's Reef, the name of the surf break off-shore. What an incredible place to build a spiritual meditation retreat, it certainly inspires a zen mindset. It’s a beautiful little sliver of beach down here, very much harking back to the days of old North County’s formerly more eclectic and bohemian surf vibe. This is a very much luxurious and competitively sought-after place to live these days. Nevertheless it hasn’t lost it’s charm by any means, and if you know where to look, that wonderful, relaxed, creative vibe is certainly still here. See the results of catastrophic cliff collapses in Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, it’s truly shocking! Entire sections of the cliffs and bluffs have cleaved open and collapsed onto the beach, shooting debris all the way to the water’s edge. The landscape of the cliffs looks extremely different than it did just a few years ago, and it seems there’s more to collapse in the future. See this summer’s collapsing cliffs and eroding shoreline from the safety of your screen. Early Spanish explorers named the grove of trees in the area Punto de Los Arboles, or “Point of Trees.” The trees served as a landmark for sailors navigating off the legendarily foggy and treacherous California coast. Today the 2000 acre Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and State Beach is a majestic oceanfront wilderness surrounded by the dense urban environment. American Journalist, Philanthropist, and the founding donor for many manor institutions in the Southern California, Ellen Browning Scripps purchased land slated for development and completed the boundaries of the reserve you see today. She was a forward thinking visionary, and staunch crusader for the improvement of not just people, but of land, and nature. Experience the breathtaking colorful sunset on the Pacific Ocean at Torrey Pines City Beach, at the southern most boundary of Black’s Beach. This gorgeous stretch of beach is just below La Jolla Farms, one of the most exclusive areas of massive estates with the best views of the San Diego coastline. Today’s golden hour is an peaceful end to a tranquil day here on the Pacific Ocean. It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together.
