The Richest Person From Every North Carolina County
Who is the richest person from each of North Carolina's 100 counties?
We went county by county, from the Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks, and crowned one person or family in every county we could. Along the way: Michael Jordan's backyard court in Wilmington, a Vanderbilt who got the smallest share, a $750 store that sold for $3 billion, and the richest person of all, who grew up in the same coastal city as Jordan.
Every net worth is dated and comes from a named source. The richest of them all is waiting at the end.
We meet figures including Michael Jordan, Buck Duke, R.J. Reynolds, George Vanderbilt, Malcom McLean, Leon Levine, and Andy Griffith, while also exploring rule-bending billionaires, disputed legends, and counties where I could not honestly verify a documented fortune.
Along the way, I investigate the claim that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school team, the story that Wilber Hardee lost Hardee's in a poker game, why David Tepper and Ken Langone do not count, and the remarkable rise of the man who invented container shipping. Watch to the end for the final two counties and the richest person of all.
Tell us in the comments: which county are you from, and did we miss a fortune? Name it and give a source if you have one.

THE RULE
A person counts if they were born in the county, grew up there, or made it their real home while the money was theirs. Vacation homes do not count. Fortunes from before the Civil War are never crowned. Each person is crowned only once, and when a county has no documented fortune, we say so. Every figure comes from a named source such as Forbes, NCpedia, a company sale price or an estate record.
SOURCES
Forbes real-time profiles (Goodnight, Jordan, Carroll, Tepper, Langone, Howroyd, MrBeast), NCpedia and the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, State Archives of North Carolina, Duke University Archives, the Biographical History of North Carolina, UNC Libraries "Talk Like a Tar Heel", local historical societies and newspapers. Figures are as of November 2026.
