Wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Five names for the changing patterns of the world. Known as wuxing, the five elements are better understood as five phases of change. They describe growth, fullness, balance, decline and rest, linked through cycles of generation and restraint. This video explores the meaning of wuxing, its relationship with yin and yang, and how Chinese thinkers applied it to the seasons, traditional medicine, dynastic history and the Five Phase Fists of Xingyiquan. Drawing on texts including the Book of Documents, Huainanzi and Wenzi, we explore a model in which each phase supports another and is held in check by another. #Wuxing #FiveElements #FivePhases #YinYang #ChinesePhilosophy #Daoism #DaoistClassics
