One more year of work buys a 60-year-old couple with $1.4 million about $467 a month for life, using Morningstar's 2026 safe starting withdrawal rate of 3.9%. That number is printed on every projection. The other price of that year is not: it is paid in healthy years.
In this video we put both prices side by side for Greg and Ellen, both 60, spending $7,000 a month: what each extra year adds in dollars, what it takes in active years, the odds that both of you get those years at all, the calendars of the people you want to spend them with, and the point where an extra year stops buying safety and starts buying surplus. We also stress-test the bad first year (a 25% drop, like 2022) and show why two half years can buy the same income as one full year.
